CMS reports more than 21,000 providers applying for EHR incentives

February 23, 2011

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have received registrations from more than 21,000 medical providers participating in the electronic health record incentive program. Have your doctors registered yet?

About two-thirds of that group say they are ready to prove they have met meaningful use requirements, Government Health IT reports. However, CMS encourages registering intent to participate in the program even for those providers who do not yet have a certified EHR or who don’t have an enrollment record in the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System

Elizabeth Holland, CMS’ director of health IT initiatives group, said the online module for attesting to meaningful use will open in April, the website reports. There will also be an attestation test module for providers to submit their information to and see if they are ready to pass the government requirements, Holland said.

When registering for the incentive program, providers will need their national provider identifier and a national plan and provider enumeration system user ID and password. If a provider is reassigning his or her benefits, they will also need a payee tax ID number and payee national provider identifier.
